Turkish TV interviews Chamber of Commerce The Netherlands-Turkey Foundation
In a spontaneous conversation between the Turkish TV business channel EkoTurk and the CCNT, the newly appointed vice-chairman Peter Wolters shares his views on the trade relationship and the opportunities that COVID-19 offers by launching digital and sustainable trade promotion initiatives between Turkey and the Netherlands.
The vice-chairman, Peter Wolters, briefly elaborates on his background. He is a former Secretary-General of a European transport association (NGO). The aim was to make ports, railways, roads, water, and air transport more compatible in ‘green’ corridors and supply chains. He regularly shared the table with EU authorities, market players (SME’s and multinationals), universities, and innovation consortia. In an early stage, he started to promote a Turkish transport innovation at the EU level.
The vice president explains that the CCNT is a not-for-profit foundation that does not has financially contributing members. The chamber welcomes visionaries, entrepreneurs, experts and partners who have the same mentality. Entrepreneurs who want to help the economy, ecology, trust, and (thus) peace through trade, innovation projects or the sales of specific, sustainable products and solutions.
Turkey is more than a growth market
Turkey is, of course, an import and export growth market. But it is also willing to export young, well-educated technical students. In the Netherlands, there is a shortage of technically trained staff. The workforce in Turkey is well equipped partly because of the many universities.
New digital & virtual promotion
On the Dutch side, the perception of Turkey needs to be improved. The vice president was impressed by the many (unknown) Turkish Teknoparks, incubation, and start-up valleys. Near Istanbul, he visited one of the many Teknoparks. It seemed as if TU Delft fits into these three times in terms of researchers and innovative solutions. But in terms of branding, marketing, and price setting, the Turks still have a lot to improve. The chamber is willing to brainstorm with Turkish companies in that area. Also in terms of creating more goodwill for Turkey.
In the interview, the vice president explains that he wants to new way of organizing trade promotion. In collaboration with a Turkish start-up, a virtual platform is being built. The aim is to more easily connect with Dutch customers.
‘Thanks’ COVID-19, it is difficult to participate in trading exhibitions. There is already a discussion with Turkish branch associations who want to participate in a pilot. The aim is to shape fairs in a broader, digital, integrated way. More than a quick zoom conversation!
Alternative energy and supply chains
When asked to respond to a Turkish energy challenge, Vice President symbolically explains how the energy eras have followed each other in recent decades. The importance of sustainable alternatives to fossil industries is explained. Renewable energy sources make the country more independent. Dutch partners of the KVK can help with energy-saving investments that pay off in the long term.
Furthermore, in the interview, the vice-president shares the insights he personally gained at a Dutch start-up. They use satellites and artificial intelligence to identify, monitor, and even predict sustainability opportunities (accessibility; surfaces; design) of infrastructure in a country, region, or city. For Turkish policymakers, it is important to define the concept of ‘sustainability’ clearly. The CCNT can help here.
Turkey can – more than is already the case – become an alternative to China. COVID-19 has made us understand the importance of robust, resilient, and shorter supply chains to Europe. Even the European Commission has publicly stated that Turkey offers opportunities here (see the video on the website).

The number of COVID-19 cases and coronavirus-related deaths in Istanbul, the country’s largest city by population, has declined thanks to the measures taken to curb the spread of the disease, according to Health Minister Fahrettin Koca (source hurriyetdailynews.com). At the beginning of September, Turkey has mandated the wearing of masks in all public areas in 81 provinces.
Though Turkey has been re-opened since 11 June, the Dutch government is still doing an orange travel advice. If you do go on holiday, you must go in quarantine for 10 days when you return to the Netherlands. To fly out of Turkey, you should be in possession of a “HES code” that indicated that you are not sick. This code must be generated via the Hayat Eve Sigar -HES- app issued by the Turkish Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health announced the latest figures on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Turkey (September 13). According to these figures, 8,519,560 COFID-19 tests have been executed so far. While the total number of cases is 291,162, the death toll has reached 7,056. 1,102 people have recovered. While 1,267 patients are reportedly in critical condition, the rate of COVID-19 patients with pneumonia has been announced as 7.2 percent. The total number of recovered players is 258,833. Enjoy your holiday with a safe feeling even in current COVID-19 times! Turkey has launched a Safe Tourism Certification Program that resulted in a Tourist Protection Support Insurance.
When you arrive in Turkey, your safe passenger’s journey starts. Airports have automatic body heat scans, security measures for staff that guide tourists to hotels, anti-virus cloud spray devices for luggage if necessary, and security measures for staff serving guests in the hospitality sector. At the same time, guests can inform themselves in detail through QR codes in hotels which indicates the latest checks by which authorized functionary.
This service is one of the first examples of its kind. The program is carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant stakeholders in the sector.
In order to receive compensation, the tourist/patient must be formally and permanently diagnosed with Covid-19 or admitted to intensive care. Subsequently, a request must be made to Güneş Sigorta insurance company. The offered service is available in three separate packages of €10, 14 and 22. The insurance can also be purchased by hotel- or tour operators by indicating the number of people.
The policy period may be up to 30 days depending on the duration of the insured’s travel. If necessary, the treatment can be continued for another 10 days in intensive care, even after the ending of the policy.
Payment is made to one of the public hospitals contracted by the insurance company. If the tourist/patient is in an uncontracted or in a private hospital, the payment can be made manually. However, administrative requirements in such unexpected pandemic environment are: a copy of passport including entrance and exit date, photocopy of passport frontside, medical follow-up forms, unpaid invoices and examination results.

The Istanbul International Financial Center (IIFC) and the possibilities for the Chambers to function as a hub for this center proved to be an interesting topic of discussion. The IIFC offers numerous interesting business opportunities for European entrepreneurs, due to its easy accessibility and solid infrastructure. The economy of Turkey is defined as an emerging market economy by the IMF. Turkey is among the world’s developed countries according to the CIA World Factbook. Turkey is also defined by economists and political scientists as one of the world’s newly industrialized countries. Therefore, doing business with Turkey can be very profitable and the IIFC can provide the means in this respect.
The IIFC project – which started in 2009 and is currently being developed in Istanbul’s Ataşehir district – has been designed to be one of the world’s major financial centers. This landmark government project aims to build a larger financial center than the existing ones in New York, London and Dubai and also aims to make Istanbul the center of finance internationally. It will create a center designed be the heart of the world financial sector and serve 24/7 as a public hub. With the completion of the project, some 30,000 people will be employed. Constructed on an area of 2.5 million square meters (26.9 million square feet), the IIFC will have 560,000 square meters of office space, 90,000 square meters of shopping mall, 70,000 square meters of hotel, 60,000 square meters of residential space and a culture and congress center with a capacity of 2,000.
